Heathcote Winery Cellar Doors

Heathcote, in central Victoria, is well-renowned for its rich soils and characteristic, intense, balanced red wines. Both the climate and soils of this region are strongly influenced by the Mt Camel Range which runs from Corop in the north to Tooborac in the south, providing natural tunnelling for the prevailing cool, south to south-east winds that blow throughout the growing period from October to March.

The Heathcote Estate vineyard is situated on Drummond’s Lane, bordering the well known Jasper Hill Emily’s Paddock Vineyard. The vineyard is planted on the slightly undulating, north-facing country which is the heartland of the region.

The land is classic Heathcote terrain – rich red-brown top soil of variable depth, but on average 15 centimetres lying above a sub-soil of clay, small rocks, quartz and rubble. This is scarcely fertile country, but it is ideal for vines as it has excellent water-holding capacity, without promoting too much vigour.

We understand we are merely custodians of our land and to make the wines deserved of this site we must have rich, healthy soils. This philosophy has led us to minimal chemical input in the vineyard and a move towards organic viticultural techniques.

The ancient, red, Cambrian soils of the renowned Heathcote region are as visually stunning as they are significant in their influence on wines from this region. The name Tellurian, meaning of the earth, was inspired by these unique soils. Our goal is to produce handcrafted wines with an equal balance of intensity and elegance, that reflect the distinctive 500 million year old Cambrian soils in which our vines are grown.

Our Tranter Rd vineyard is located on the western slopes of the Mt Camel Range overlooking the township of Toolleen. The 80 ha of land includes 22 ha under vine, comprising of 16 ha of Shiraz planted in 2002, 2003 and 2006, with the remaining area planted in 2011 and 2012 including Grenache, Mourvedre, Viognier, Marsanne, Riesling and Nero D’Avola.

Located in the coveted south end of Heathcote, Victoria, the vines nestle in the sought-after granitic soil amongst dramatic scenery of large granite boulders, majestic rolling hills and imposing gullies that are framed by the Great Dividing Range. Picture-perfect.

The Merindoc range of wines is supported by two very different vineyards, Willoughby Bridge Vineyard, at Colbinabbin, Northern Heathcote has a warm continental climate and the well known Cambrian Red soil, whilst the Merindoc Vineyard, at Tooborac, the southern of the Heathcote region, is on the sweeping slopes of the Macedon Ranges and features granite soils and cool night temperatures.

The variety of climates and soil types between our two Heathcote Vineyards allows us to grow a wide range of varietals well suited to the different aspects of the Heathcote region not only creating a diverse range of wine styles, but also requiring careful and adaptive viticultural expertise, to bring forth the best from each vine.

Hand pruning, hand picking and training all give the vineyard staff an intimate knowledge of every slope, and every clone, allowing us to express a ‘’sense of place”.

As is often said, the best fertilizer is the vigneron’s footstep.

Heathcote Winery’s Cellar Door and Winery are uniquely positioned in the main street of Heathcote. The Cellar Door and adjacent Art Gallery are housed in a restored miners produce store built by Thomas Craven in 1854 to cater for the huge influx of gold miners seeking their fortune.

The winery produced its first vintage in 1981 and now specialises in the production of Shiraz and Viognier reflective of the Heathcote Region but distinctly Heathcote Winery. Shiraz is the cornerstone of Heathcote Winery’s premium wine production, including the highly acclaimed Mail Coach Shiraz and flagship Curagee Shiraz.

Visitors to cellar door may enjoy free wine tastings and a selection of regional gourmet items. Heathcote Winery Galleria serves seasonal fare during the day from Thursday to Sunday. Or just relax and unwind with a glass of wine in our sheltered rustic courtyard.

At Domaine Asmara, we are known for our small range of premium red and white wines. We’re not a huge winery, we’re pretty small. We don’t have a heap of fancy equipment or a big staff, there is only a few of us doing all the work. BUt the one thing we don’t compromise on is our wine. Everything we do is dedicated to producing exceptional wines.

We spend our days tending our vines by hand, there’s no machine intervention here, the only thing that intervenes is Mother Nature. You could in fact say our wine is bio-dynamic. We like to say, let Mother Nature do it’s work on simply great vines.
