Mitchelton and its history can be traced over the decades through the pervasive influence of Central Victoria’s Goulburn River’s flow and the unfolding narrative of its distinctive wines. In 1967, Melbourne entrepreneur Ross Shelmerdine commissioned wine industry stalwart Colin Preece to find the best site for premium wine grape growing anywhere in south eastern Australia. Preece chose an old grazing estate, then known as Blackwood Park, in the Nagambie district in Central Victoria. The river surrounds the vineyard on three sides, shaping the unique environment and climate of Mitchelton. The result is four starkly different soil profiles, creating vineyards within a vineyard across the 154 heactare estate. Proudly ‘home grown’, Mitchelton crafts wines which are expressive of Central Victoria’s best and the wineries rich heritage with Shiraz and Riesling.
