Victorian Wineries

Mitchelton and its history can be traced over the decades through the pervasive influence of Central Victoria’s Goulburn River’s flow and the unfolding narrative of its distinctive wines. In 1967, Melbourne entrepreneur Ross Shelmerdine commissioned wine industry stalwart Colin Preece to find the best site for premium wine grape growing anywhere in south eastern Australia. Preece chose an old grazing estate, then known as Blackwood Park, in the Nagambie district in Central Victoria.

The river surrounds the vineyard on three sides, shaping the unique environment and climate of Mitchelton. The result is four starkly different soil profiles, creating vineyards within a vineyard across the 154 heactare estate. Proudly ‘home grown’, Mitchelton crafts wines which are expressive of Central Victoria’s best and the wineries rich heritage with Shiraz and Riesling.

Valhalla Wines handcrafts its wines using natural vineyard practices, traditional winemaking techniques and careful cellaring in its straw bale winery. Valhalla has been established with environmental sustainability as a core value of its business. Varieties such as Viognier, Marsanne, Grenache, Shiraz and Durif are the heroes here, with the winemaker’s attention to detail creating wines of character…..wines with soul. The Winery and can be found just 10 minutes from Rutherglen. The new lambs are roaming in the Vineyard with the geese and the pruning is almost finished.

Ezard at Levantine Hill is a gastronomic partnership between hatted chef Teage Ezard and Levantine Hill Estate.

Teage Ezard has taken his famed gourmet experience outside the city limits to offer locals and visitors to the Yarra Valley the perfect dining match to Levantine Hill’s critically acclaimed wines.

In amongst the stunning bucolic vineyard views, visitors can enjoy Levantine Hill wines matched to dishes inspired by the classic food styles of Europe, which Teage Ezard has enhanced with new flavours and combinations.

The architecture has been personally designed by renowned architect Karl Fender of Fender Katsalidis Architects and interiors were meticulously designed by Molecule. The 100 metre sweep of the curved roof of the venue and the private barrel-like tasting booths reference the sleek curves of a wine barrel.

On offer are two dining spaces. The All Day Dining space offers sharing plates to be enjoyed with great wine and company. The Signature Restaurant offers a five course and eight course tasting menu perfectly matched to Levantine Hill wines.

T’Gallant is the sailor’s abbreviation for topgallant, the top sail of square-rigger sailing ships. It connotes the peak, the best, the epitome.

T’Gallant’s winemaking philosophy is the same. The range of wines exude a vibrant, eccentric personality and an impeccable sense of style.

Built on a tradition of exceptional Pinot varieties – Grigio, Gris and Noir – T’Gallant wines support a vision for the creation of great Australian Pinot.

There is an authenticity to T’Gallant which has made it one of Australia’s most respected producers. Their fearless attitude and individualism also ensures they always stand out from the crowd.

Yering Station was originally established in 1838 as Victoria’s first vineyard and today, this family owned Winery Tourism Complex is reaching new heights.

Beyond the manicured gardens lies the contemporary stone edifice, which houses the Wine Bar Restaurant and the winemaking facilities, seen through the viewing platforms. The restaurant’s cuisine is modern with the emphasis on regional produce.

The seasonal menu is designed to compliment Yering Station wines. The converted old winery building comprises a Produce Store show casing local produce, dynamic Art Gallery raising money for the Royal children’s hospital, Matt’s Bar the perfect place to enjoy a casual glass of wine with a gourmet snack and the Cellar Door.

This is where you can taste the full range of the estate’s award-winning wines, Barak’s Bridge, Yering Station and Yarra Edge, along with the critically acclaimed traditional method, Yarrabank.

Amongst other things, the barn hosts the forever-popular Regional Farmers market every 3rd Sunday of the month. Yering Station operates seven days.

Kyneton Ridge Estate Winery and Cellar door is family owned by Pauline Russell and John Boucher. John is the winemaker and his family has a long tradition of wine making going back to his great grandfather.

Fine food is a major feature at Kyneton Ridge with gourmet delight platters, pizzas and coffee served all weekend, with seating for up to 50 people by open fire in winter or under the sails on the deck in warmer weather. Air conditioning provided in the cellar door dining room.

Taste or buy wines from other wine list featuring Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and classy Macedon Sparkling.

The Oxley vineyard and Sam Miranda Cellar Door rests by the lovely creek bed of the King river which is fed by the melting winter snow that covers the Victorian High Plains from June to September. The site is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon & Petit Verdot and posseses rich soils and a cool climate allowing for long ripening periods which produces medium bodied wines that express the fresh and elegant characteristics that the region is renowned for.

As you enter a subterranean passage which leads you to our tasting area, you will experience the feeling of entering an underground cellar, streaming with light from the forty foot light tower that stands sentinel above you.
